With their distinct beaks, colorful plumage, and incredible behavior, hornbills are among the most fascinating birds to photograph. This nesting season offers you a rare chance to catch all four species that call this park home:
- Great Hornbill (Buceros bicornis) The Great Hornbill is one of the largest and most iconic hornbills in the world. With its yellow and black beak and striking white wing patches, it’s easy to spot. During the nesting season, they can often be seen near their nests, where the female stays inside the tree cavity, only emerging to join the male during feeding.
- Wreathed Hornbill (Rhyticeros undulatus) Known for the large, helmet-like casque on its beak, the Wreathed Hornbill is another incredible species to watch. Their vocalizations echo through the forest as they move between trees, and during nesting season, they often perch in the upper branches, providing an amazing sight for photographers.
- Austen’s Brown Hornbill (Anorrhinus austeni) Smaller than the other hornbills, Austen’s Brown Hornbill has a distinct, slightly down-curved beak and dark plumage. Despite its elusive nature, you may spot it during the nesting season, as it prefers to stay hidden in the forest canopy, only making short foraging flights.
- Oriental Pied Hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris) The Oriental Pied Hornbill, with its black and white feathers and large yellow and black beak, is one of the most approachable species. During nesting season, the males play an essential role in protecting the nesting female, who remains enclosed in a tree cavity, and it’s a fascinating behavior to capture on camera.
